Why Technology Is So Important For Farming?
Over the last century introduction of new technologies influenced the way how we live, travel, sleep, and eat. Technology is everywhere, even if we have no idea about it it has a great influence on our lives.
Agriculture and farming are the two that probably ware influenced the most and the best way. New breeds and pieces along with modern powerful equipment allow farmers to produce more food with less effort and expenditures then even before. Of course world hunger is not still eliminated, but for example China saw its hunger level fall from 24% of its population in the early 1990s to about 9% by 2016. If we look on entire world we will see that since 1970s the hunger has fallen from 35% to around 15%. And yes thanks to technologies that became available not only to European and North American countries but also to developing part of the world such as Asia and Africa.
Notice: Food and Agriculture Organization of the united nations defines hunger as “having not enough caloric intake to meet daily minimum energy requirements”.
Food shortage is still an issue
2020 was the only year in the last 100 years when global hunger appeared to increase. But, it is obvious that 2020 was probably the worst year for entire humanity after WW2 finished.
But can you imagine how bad things could be if we still had to plough and till with horses instead of powerful tractor towed equipment? Or if we had ineffective breeds of animals not producing enough milk or meat. Well not all of us but really a lot of people would die.
Last but not least: fewer people occupied in farming while producing more goods means more people can move to other important or pleasant areas such as engineering or music.
Starvation and hunger are still issue despite having farming equipment and new breeds of plants and animals that are much more efficient. Reasons are numerous: starting with wars ending with governmental corruption that hinders effective management and ending with deforestation.
Modern problems – Modern Solutions
Still despite enjoying technological advances farmers and their animals may be vulnerable to major force. To cope with this we have our tech solutions once again.
Smart alarm systems, are able to give farmers 24/7 live data on the condition of animals inside the barn. So if anything is wrong for instance temperature went down due to heating system misfunction farmer can get to the barn as soon as possible and fix the corresponding system. Such solutions are especially important for poultry and swine producers because the animals can be extremely vulnerable to changes in conditions in the barn or and to the lack of drinking water.
GMO – concerns and benefits
The disputes over using genetically modified products are constantly kept warm. Some claim that GMO is harmless some treat it as pure poison.
The real thing that such corps for example, are less vulnerable to temperature fluctuations lack of humidity then traditional ones.
The core benefit of GMO is that such products can decrease production cost and so decrease final price and make products affordable to larger population. Also most of GMO products in developed countries are used as an animal feed. So regular person has very little interaction with GMO in fact. In such case GMO corn and soya beans are making hotdogs and burgers more affordable than before, while animal feed still takes the largest portion in meat production.
Most widespread examples of GMO products are: rice, tomatoes, corn, etc. And yes: we have genetically modified salmon already.
All modern technologies must be serving humanity and its bring benefits to it. Agriculture is the best illustration of how entire globe may benefit from technology and science.
